The mayor of Clark’s Harbour says he’s proud that the famous Cape Islander fishing boat will be featured on a new coin.
The boat, along with Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse, will be part of the design on the reverse side of the 2017 Canada 150th anniversary
commemorative circulation loonie.
Mayor Leigh Stoddart says it’s long overdue to have the Cape Islander recognized this way.
“They’re giving us recognition for our Cape Islander boat which is, as you know, is world famous for its fishing abilities and seaworthiness.
The only time it’s ever been recognized before that was in 1996 when we had the year of the wooden boat. It was the last working Cape Islander, that I’m aware of, built right here in Clark’s Harbour. The last one was built by Freebert Atkinson, grandson of Ephraim Atkinson, who designed and built the first Cape Islander in 1906.”
The coin was designed by Wesley Klassen of Ontario and is one of five commemorative coins in the 2017 circulation series
created by the winning entries in a national contest.
