Yarmouth town council does not support Th’YARC staying on Parade Street.
At yesterday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, the town denied a request from YARC President Mitch Bonnar to have access to the neighbouring Grand Street Extension for expansion.
Mayor Pam Mood says a new arts centre is needed, and it needs to be downtown.
“It’s up to council to make the tough decision. This isn’t something that should tear a community apart, it should bring us together. It’s up to council to do what is best for the greater good of the entire community. In trying to build, not just a downtown, but to make sure things are economically viable in all those pieces, it belongs in the downtown core.”
The town will send a letter to the Yarmouth Regional Arts Council asking for direction by the end of March.
Last August, Th’YARC received federal funding for upgrades to the parking lot and repairs to the building.
