The Halifax Typographical Union has been on strike for a year.
They are locked in a labour dispute with the Chronicle Herald newspaper over wage rollbacks, changes to seniority and working conditions.
Support for the union was shown in Yarmouth today as the South West Labour Group and NSGEU held a demonstration outside Yarmouth MLA Zach Churchill’s office.
Yarmouth rally organizer Greg Williams says the workers have been asked to accept quite a few concessions.
“A 10 per cent pay-cut, and concessions to their pension plan. They want to reduce the workforce for older workers it seems. Workers over 50 seem to be the target. I’m hopeful for a resolution. No thanks to our provincial government. They have the power to appoint a conciliator from the department of labour. They need to step up and start looking out for workers in the province, because it’s really distasteful what they are doing to all the workers and all the organized labour.”
Churchill came out of his office and spoke with the small group, saying the conciliation offer stands.

Negotiations between the Chronicle Herald and the Halifax Typographic Union resumed this past week.
The HTU has accused the Herald of refusing to bargain in good faith.
A hearing with the Nova Scotia Labour Board was postponed to allow negotiation to proceed.
It has been rescheduled for February 8th, unless this round of talks is successful in getting a deal done.
