A local para-track athlete has a busy 2017 ahead.
Yarmouth’s Ryan Shay was in Georgia recently training for the upcoming race season.
Shay does most of his training at the Canada Games Centre in Halifax.
He says his ultimate goal is to get to the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.
“Hopefully I’ll get to the World Championships sometime around July before Canada Games. If I can make that happen then I’ll be in the right direction for now. I’ll be training hard for the next three years and keep competing.”
Shay is hosting a fundraiser at the Rodd Grand Hotel on Saturday.
He says he gets to do a lot of amazing things, but it costs money.
“Things like equipment, tires, coaching costs, accommodations, registration for meets. It’s a huge budget we’ve put together, and we try to cover a lot of it with fundraising.”
Shay says he can’t wait to come back to Yarmouth and meet up with many who have supported him throughout his journey.
