A workplace accident investigation into the death of a fishermen off Shelburne County on the weekend is underway.
Jimmy Buchanan was lobster fishing aboard the ‘Secret Sea’ when he suddenly went overboard.
The 44-year old man from Shelburne was quickly pulled back inside the boat but he remained unresponsive.
The RCMP determined the matter was not suspicious and passed the case on to the Nova Scotia Department of Labour.
The department’s Scott Nauss says these types of investigations can take time.
“There’s a lot of moving parts to these investigations. We have up to two years, that’s our statute of limitations in order to lay charges. We always try to conclude the investigations as soon as possible to provide closure for the family and also to get the root cause out there to prevent it from reoccurring.”
Nauss says they will be taking statements along with gathering physical evidence, photos and video.
A video camera was used aboard the fishing boat.
The Transportation Safety Board is also sending investigators to Shelburne to gather information and assess the occurrance.
