Some local high school hockey teams could soon be back on the ice.
The names of the squads and look of the sweaters will be a little different.
The Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association will take part in the new ‘Midget X’ division for high school players currently without a team.
YCMHA President Ian White says both male and female teams will be able to take part.
“The Yarmouth High team and Par-en-Bas school can both bring in their full teams. As long as they pay the registration and their coaches are qualified, we’re good to go. We’re very glad to work with them.”
White says they are still working on details, but they should be able to start play by the middle of the month.
“It will be similar to the Valley League that pre-existed. There are a few kinks to work out with the girls league, because many are already playing minor hockey and you can’t do both. But overall, it’s looking very positive and it looks like high school kids will be able to play.”
The teams will play a 12 game season followed by playdowns and provincials.
Last month, Hockey Nova Scotia announced the initiative, saying it’s their mandate to make sure hockey is available at all levels.
