Nova Scotia’s Progressive Conservative Leader says the labour dispute between teachers and government should never have gotten to this point.
Jamie Baillie says he would propose reforms in the classroom that could make life easier for teachers while providing cost-savings to government.
Baillie says that includes class composition, and attendance and discipline policies that teachers can enforce.
“And you know this idea that everyone passes every year, I think that needs to be reviewed. I think it should be okay to fail a student for their own good if they don’t meet the curriculum.”
Baillie says the government found money to provide a ferry in Yarmouth and rebuild Bluenose II but isn’t budging to make improvements in the classroom.
Teachers have been without a contract since July 2015.
Bargaining talks with the province were held before Christmas.
However, the date for those talks to resume is not known at this time.
