Nova Scotians are being encouraged to practice fire safety this holiday season.
In a release yesterday from the province, Yarmouth MLA and Municipal Affairs Minister Zach Churchill says Christmas trees and candles add to the beauty of the holidays, but they can also pose a fire risk.

Yarmouth Fire Chief John Verrall says there are a number of things to take into consideration.
“If you have a real Christmas tree, make sure you keep it watered often. Also, if you do have a real candle and you have it lit, make sure it is supervised at all times. Never leave a candle burning on its own.”
Other tips include checking smoke and carbon monoxide detectors weekly during the holiday season, refraining from using outdoor lights inside, checking for frayed or cracked wires and avoiding running extension cords over door-sills or under carpets.
Verrall says winter months are definitely busier for firefighters when cold weather hits, as homeowners turn on the heat.
