Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says the federal government is closely watching the situation in Mexico after violence erupted in the wake of a security operation that killed a major cartel leader.
Mexican authorities confirmed the death of the cartel figure on Sunday near Puerto Vallarta, prompting unrest that led to army and National Guard deployments.
Anand says her Mexican counterpart has assured her the situation should normalize in the coming days, calling the operation “targeted.” Still, she says the situation remains fluid and her priority is the safety of Canadians.
She’s urging anyone in Mexico to register with Global Affairs Canada to receive real‑time travel advisories. More than 26,000 Canadians have now signed up — an increase of nearly 8,000 in a single day — after the site briefly experienced technical issues due to high traffic.
Anand says there are no plans at this time to bring Canadians home, but consular staff remain on the ground providing support.
