A former seniors home in Yarmouth is being converted into housing.
Work is underway at the ‘Sunset Terrace’ building on James Street, to turn it into a 12-unit complex, seven of them affordable.
The three-storey Victorian building should be ready to welcome tenants this fall.
Mayor Pam Mood says everyone has a sweet spot for that building.
“To see it turned into affordable housing, it doesn’t get better than that. We’re absolutely thrilled, and excited for what’s to come,” said Mayor Mood.
The Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia is leading the work.
Ottawa is funding $1.4 million, the province is giving $1.3 million.
Yarmouth MLA Nick Hilton says the landscape is changing.
“To see vacant properties used to house residents here is exciting. These continued partnerships with AHANS are great for this community,” said MLA Hilton.
Acadie-Annapolis MP Chris d’Entremont says it adds housing stock that’s affordable.
“Many people in this community are having trouble finding housing that’s affordable. It helps protect vulnerable people, and will help retain employees for local businesses.”
The announcement was made inside a new affordable unit on Shaw Avenue.
The first part of that project is expected to be ready this April, the remainder will open in the fall.
