Over half a million dollars for a commercial fishing port in western Nova Scotia
The province is giving $600,000 to the Digby Harbour Port Association for upgrades to protect the area from climate change.
That includes a study on how rising sea levels and storms affect wharves and the shoreline.
Association CEO Edwin Chisholm says the port is a big part of the economy.
“It’s vital that this port keeps going, because there’s no alternative. Our vessels cannot go elsewhere, up and down the Bay of Fundy, this is a critical piece of infrastructure,” said Chisholm.
The Port of Digby supports 600 jobs and is valued at over $100 million, according to the province.
Chisholm says the study will focus on coastal erosion.
“So that we can get phase one of a future build ready. When our partners come to the table, we want to be ready.”
The plan will also look at how natural grass, shrubs and trees can protect the harbour and port.
