A re-branded program is helping feed many in Yarmouth.
The former ‘100 Meals’ program is now called ‘Yarmouth Community Cook Ups.’
The initiative puts on six meals per week through winter, hosted by different organizations.
Coordinator Steve Berry says it’s important for socializing.
“Throughout the winter, seasonal depression can kick in, and not everyone has family and friends that they can get out to. It’s a comfy and welcoming environment, and they can get a meal and save a few bucks toward something else, like groceries or bills,” said Berry.
Meals are hosted at places like the Hope Centre, the Knights of Columbus and local churches.
Souls Harbour and the Acts of Kindness society are just some of the groups that are helping out.
Berry says the community is always supportive.
“Speaking with Souls Harbour, often when they come into communities they’re the only organization that does this type of work. We have six or seven groups here to choose from with free meals. We all seem to look out for each other and step up when it counts the most.”
