The Nova Scotia RCMP says its approach to illegal cannabis enforcement remains unchanged following the province’s announcement of a new crackdown, saying officers are already doing the work outlined by the government.
In a statement to our newsroom, the RCMP said its mandate is to enforce both federal and provincial laws related to cannabis sales, and that continues regardless of the province’s new direction.
“The RCMP is mandated to enforce both federal and provincial laws as they apply to the sale of cannabis – we’ve been doing that, and will continue to do so,” said Senior Communications Advisor Allison Gerrard.
Public safety remains the force’s priority.
In February, Southwest Nova RCMP executed 13 search warrants at illegal cannabis storefronts located both on and off First Nations land.
Officers seized cannabis along with other illicit drugs, firearms, and cash, which the RCMP says highlights broader risks tied to unlicensed cannabis operations.
“This underscores the broader public safety concerns linked to illegal cannabis sales,” Gerrard said.
The RCMP says it continues to work with communities and partner agencies as cannabis enforcement proceeds across the province.
“The Nova Scotia RCMP remains committed to working constructively with all communities and partners to address these issues in a way that helps protect the public and upholds the law,” the statement said.
