Good Morning !
As we countdown the days until Christmas , some Christmas traditions come into play , such as going in the forest to find and chop a Christmas tree or putting Christmas lights on your home or property . Christmas pageants and concerts , caroling in a group to entertain seniors or friends , these are just a few of the ” Normal” traditions that we as Nova Scotians have come to love . What about the rest of the world ?
There’s KFC Christmas (Japan): In Japan, it is customary to celebrate Christmas with buckets of fried chicken. A marketing campaign worked so well that the Colonel basically became Santa.
There’s The Gävle Goat (Sweden): A 43-foot straw goat is erected each year. The real tradition is people trying to keep it from being burned by pranksters. (
There’s Roller-Skating to Mass (Venezuela): Caracas residents roller-skate all night, then straight into morning mass.
There’s Christmas Picnics (South Africa): It’s summer – so forget roasting chestnuts…and grab a grill. Christmas BBQs on the beach are called “braais”.
There’s Parols (Philippines): These are gorgeous star lanterns that make our Christmas lights look like sad, flickering amateurs.
There’s Tió de Nadal (Catalonia): A smiling log that kids feed until it “poops” presents on Christmas. (
There’s Christmas Spiders (Ukraine): Spider ornaments hang on trees, thanks to a folktale about webs turning into tinsel.
Let’s not forget Krampus (Alpine Regions): Krampus is a horned monster who punishes naughty kids before Christmas.
Also There’s La Befana (Italy): A friendly Christmas witch who delivers gifts on January 5.
And one more for you , The Night of the Radishes (Mexico): Giant radishes are carved into masterpieces for one night only.
