Could the next election include a municipal mayor in Yarmouth?
The Municipality of the District of Yarmouth wants to know if electors prefer to choose a head of council, or keep the warden system.
Wardens are voted on by council during the first meeting of a new term.
Warden John Cunningham says staff will have a professional study completed.
“That would mean there would be a random sampling. There was some discussion on if we wanted to have community meetings, but at the end of the day, we want to have it professionally done,” said Warden Cunningham.
He says having a mayor and six councillor system would require a boundary review, and if that’s the direction council takes, they can’t go back to the warden system.
Cunningham says they’re always trying to engage the public.
“Bottom line, it’s about what the public wants. Do they want a mayoral system where they get to pick the leader of council, or are they happy with the current warden system? It’s something we’ve been hearing about for a few terms now.”
He says results are expected sometime in the new year.
The next municipal elections are in 2028.
