It’s a whale of a success story!
Marine Animal Response Society (MARS) says early Wednesday afternoon they received a call about a small whale swimming in shallow water in Cow Bay.
It was a young female pilot whale.
Quick action from standup paddle boarders and nearby residents, under the guidance of MARS, the whale was safely stabilized in shallow water.
“Despite cold water and challenging rocky terrain, volunteers stayed with the animal for hours, helping us keep her upright and calm,” says MARS.
By mid-afternoon the whale was secured in pontoons and guided out to deeper water using a jet ski, with the paddle boarders who helped monitor.
She swam free by 4:23 p.m.
“Huge thanks to the incredible community members who reported this stranding right away and stepped up to help. Your care and teamwork gave this young whale a second chance,” says MARS.
