Workers at a long-term care home in Yarmouth have voted in favour of strike action.
Nearly 100 workers at Villa St. Joseph-Du-Lac in Dayton said yes in a strike vote held last week, only one voted against it.
In a release, CUPE Local 3064 say they’re fighting for improvements to the sector.
President Marla Nickerson says recruitment and retention aren’t just buzzwords, they’re the difference between your loved ones getting the care they deserve, versus the level the province thinks is acceptable.
They’re also calling for higher wages.
CUPE says only half of the facilities in the province meet the recommended 4.1 hours of care per day, per resident.
The Villa workers are the latest long-term care group to vote yes to strike action, it’s happening with many CUPE local groups across the province.
The contract with the province ran out on October 31.
