A former provincial Liberal leader is speaking out on the federal floor crossing.
Zach Churchill of Yarmouth supports Acadie-Annapolis MP Chris d’Entremont’s decision to leave the Conservatives and join the Liberals.
In a video statement, Churchill praised d’Entremont for using good judgement, and said did it for the right reasons.
“One reason being, the federal Conservative party is willing to topple Mark Carney’s government, months after they were elected with a strong mandate to deal with Donald Trump and his economic policies,” said Churchill.
He says d’Entremont is not a great fit with the current rendition of the federal Conservatives, who he says use divisive politics.
At the same time, Churchill says he understands the hurt and betrayal some voters are feeling, reflecting on two Liberal MLAs joining the Progressive Conservatives during his time as leader.
“I think that’s a pretty normal reaction under these circumstances, and I get that people think ‘this isn’t what we voted for,’ but people vote for different reasons. I know some people didn’t vote for me because they thought I snubbed them at the grocery store.”
Churchill says we empower elected representatives to use their best judgement.
“This decision might prove to be very consequential for the country at this moment in time.”
