Three Ontario Highschools have come under fire from parents after announcing they were canceling this years prom dance. The Schools cite growing expectations, liabilities and risks when hosting prom at the end of the school year.
Today a Promenade Dance or Prom is a formal dance party for students graduating high school at the end of the year but it wasn’t always like that.
In North America the tradition of proms began in the early 1920’s, but the history of prom like events can be traced to the late 19th century in universities rather than high schools! In fact high schools didn’t adopt the tradition until the 1920’s and 30’s, and the popularity of the year end event didn’t start becoming popular until the 1950’s! Since then the tradition has exploded in popularity across all of North America!
I remember my prom, I wasn’t crowned king, nor did I have a date, but I remember the night fondly and would gladly re-live the night if I could go back in time!
The yearly tradition of prom has been with schools all across the country for a long time, who do you agree with, the schools canceling prom, or the parents and students upset about the decision?
