Lots of reaction after Lunenburg MLA Suzanne Lohnes-Croft said she would have supported the bill to impose a contract on teachers.
PC Leader Jaime Baillie says she made the wrong move, siding with her caucus.
“And it’s at that moment that Suzanne chose to stand with the Liberal party instead of her constituents.”
He does respect Lohnes-Croft with standing up and being accountable for her decision.
“I will give her credit for at least being truthful, that she chose the Liberal party that day instead of trying to have it both ways.”
The PC Leader went on to say, “Many other Liberal MLAs are trying to have it both ways. They’re trying to tell their constituents that they really were on their side while at the same time telling Premier McNeil that they were on his side.”
Baillie says the Premier was determined to bully his way through to a contract with teachers when he whipped his party to support bill 75 in the legislature on Monday.
He calls it the worst kind of old politics and says the caucus system is failing Nova Scotians.
“There are times when people need to be free to represent their constituents.”
NDP Leader Gary Burrill says an MLA needs to account to more than their constituents and their party.
“I think that every elected person is answerable to their conscience.”
Baillie says his called on the Premier to let MLAs vote their conscience on the teachers contract bill, but those calls fell on deaf ears.
