Tax rates are going up in the Municipality of Argyle.
The residential and resources rates are climbing two cents to $1.13 per $100 of assessment, while the commercial rate will stay the same at $2.29.
Warden Nicole Albright says they’re also putting in $330,000 of surplus funds to help balance the $12 million budget.
“That’s not a sustainable model to do every year, we can’t continue to pull money from our reserves. We had to make a compromise and do a little bit of a tax increase while pulling money from our reserves,” said Albright.
She adds costs in policing, waste collection and education have gone up over half a million this year combined.
“Costs have definitely gone up, it’s a trend that’s happening everywhere. It was really triggered by those three areas, amounting to a shortfall of $450,000 this year.
Albright says they’ve got a major wind turbine investment in Wedgeport and revenues to reduce waste collection costs in the coming years.
Council will meet next week to discuss the capital budget, expected to come in at $5.9 million.
