A big second period helped the Yarmouth Junior A Mariners to a victory tonight.
The Mariners held on to beat the Pictou County Weeks Crushers 4-3 at Mariners Centre, just their second home game in over a month.

Three goals in less than six minutes, including two on the powerplay gave Yarmouth a 4-2 lead after two and they never looked back.
Matt Smith was the game’s first star with two goals and an assist, Brent Broaders and Luc Poirier also scored and goalie Leif Hertz made 25 saves for the win.
Mariners Head Coach Laurie Barron says special teams were big for his club.
“We were good on the penalty kill and extremely good on the powerplay with two big goals. Sometimes you have to rely on specialty teams, and they did a real good job tonight.”
Barron says despite some defensive lapses at times, he was happy with the win.
“Leif (Hertz) made some big saves tonight, we found a way. That club is no pushover with guys like (Michael) Dill, (Dylan) Riley and (Jacob) Hickey. We found a way and we’ll take two points whenever we can.”
Yarmouth improved to 10-1 at the ‘Fishtank’ this year and 15-6 on the season.
The Mariners stay on home ice for a game tomorrow night against the St. Stephen Aces.
