An entertaining weekend of hockey in Barrington.
The Southwest Storm hosted the Maritime Junior C championship, as hundreds watched at the Sandy Wickens Memorial Arena.
The Storm went 0-3, eventually the East Hants Penguins would win the championship over Tri-County, New Brunswick 3-2 in double-overtime.
Storm graduating forward Cole Nickerson says it meant a lot to play in front of family and friends.
“A lot of good teams are here, it’s fast paced as well. Over my last four years, I’ve played with a lot of good players and made memories that will last forever,” said Nickerson.
The veteran was part of three-straight Nova Scotia Regional Hockey League championships, including two-straight victories over the Penguins in the final.
This year, the Storm just qualified for the playoffs and lost in the first round to East Hants.
Southwest rookie defender Ryan d’Entremont is part of a youth movement for the team this year.
He added, the players and coaching staff have been great.
“Love the fans here too and the crowd is awesome. We’ve been excited about this weekend all year. We’re representing our province and community here. Had lots of friends and family watching here too.”
Head Coach Andrew Holland thanks the volunteers for making the weekend a success.
“I’m so proud of our community. All of our parents have donated their time to help out, and our committee has done an incredible job. It looks and feels like a professionally run event. We’ve got the best Junior C fans in the Maritimes,” said Holland.
Four teams took part in the tournament from Thursday to Sunday.
Seafood chowder was sold at the Barrington Curling Club next door, with proceeds going to the club and the tournament.
