Last week, 88 percent of respondents to our web poll told us they would be putting winter tires on their vehicle.
That doesn’t surprise a Yarmouth mechanic.
In fact, if you haven’t got them on your vehicle, you’re in the minority.
George Emin has been installing winter tires for more years than he cares to remember and says he’s seen a big increase in the number of motorists getting winter tires.
“Absolutely. I would say they’ve increased over double over what they used to be. They are three times better than any all-season tire.”
And what about studded tires ?
Emin says there are varying opinions.
“I personally do not like them for here because I find they’re are slippery on dry pavement. Studs are only good for ice. As far as slush or snow they don’t make any difference whatsoever. I don’t find here, for what little bit of ice we have, that they’re worth getting.”
Emin says he and his staff have began installing winter tires around the first of October and they’ve put on close to one thousand tires so far.
Winter tires are the fastest growing tire category in Canada according to the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada’s 2017 Winter Tire Report.
