No more ice this season at the Digby Arena.
The facility had to close last week due to the ice plant breaking down.
Hockey and curling teams had to move games and practices outside the region, creating more travel for families.
Mayor Mike Bartlett says the problems started with an ammonia leak last month.
“About a week after that, our condenser on the outside went. So we had to shut the arena down, and it affects both hockey and curling as they use the same system,” said Mayor Bartlett.
The cost to repair the ice plant is about $250,000, and that’s top priority at the 38-year-old facility.
Mayor Bartlett says he’s been in communication with MLA Jill Balser, and they’ll be applying for funding through the province.
He thanks rinks in Clare and Bridgetown for stepping in to help.
“Minor hockey has been able to play in Clare, and our figure skating club does a show every year, we’re glad Bridgetown could take them in. We have a great team here in the region, from the Valley right down to Yarmouth.”
The Clare Curling club will also host upcoming provincial tournaments that were to be held in Digby.
An NHL Legends tour event scheduled for later this month has been moved to the fall.
