You can shed some light on abuse against women.
A purple light that is.
The Shine A Light On Woman Abuse campaign is a first for this region and is a collaboration of Juniper House, Shyft House and the Tri-County Women’s Centre.
It started in London, Ontario where the Abused Women’s Centre uses their annual campaign to honour two women who have been impacted by abuse.
This year Cindy Gladue, a 26-year-old Cree woman and mother of three from Edmonton who was murdered and Ashley Desjardin from London who survived abuse are being remembered and honoured.
Purple has become a symbol of the fight against woman abuse.
The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness of men’s violence against women by turning communities purple for the month of November.
Lisa Newell-Bain, the executive director of Juniper House, says campaigns like this are having a positive effective.
“I think there’s more awareness in the community, I think there’s better supports in the community for women. the conversation is being had. More people are seeking services as well as more people are providing information to others about the services that are available.”
