Nova Scotia’s Premier wants to see an end to provincial trade borders.
Premier Tim Houston made the comments as the country continues to prepare for potential trade tariffs from the United States
Houston says nobody wants Donald Trump’s tax.
“So we have to use this time as a rally call to strengthen Canada. That includes looking at our own internal trade policies across Canada. If it’s good enough for Ontario, B.C. and other provinces, it’s good enough for Nova Scotia,” said Houston during a media availability.
He also talked about the province’s untapped natural resources, saying we have to have the courage to have those conversations.
“We have a long way to go. We have significant opportunities, and I think it’s time we realized on those opportunities. We need to be willing to discuss how this can be done safely. My message is what matters to the future of this province. We rely very heavily on the feds, we have an aging population and a cost to deliver healthcare, we have to grow our revenue.”
The Premier noted there’s a lot of unnecessary red tape around natural resources, and they need to address it.
Houston says the U.S. is a big trade market, but we need to look at other trade partners.
He adds he’ll do everything he can to protect Nova Scotia’s businesses.
