A long-awaited elementary school is finally open in a Yarmouth County community.
The new Ecole Wedgeport is located next to the former school, about 80 students from pre-primary to Grade 6 attend.
It features a gym, canteen, modern classrooms and learning spaces in the hallways.
Principal Jen Surette says staff and students are thrilled.
‘The students have gotten used to the new school quite quickly, and they’re overjoyed at the things that are here that weren’t in the old school. The colours are so bright and the spaces are really modern, it’s been really enjoyable and a great transition,” said Surette.
The project was announced by the CSAP in 2018, the site for the build was chosen in 2020.
This after a community group highlighted the need for the 60-year-old school to be replaced.
Surette says the school will help maintain the region’s Acadian culture.
“The school is decorated with Acadian colours. We were able to have the students do an art installation painted as an Acadian flag. Each student last year painted a tile as part of a mosaic that got installed in the cafeteria.”
The new school does have some play areas, but students are still able to access the old playground.
Construction began in 2022.
