A political science professor is predicting a new Prime Minister will be in place by early-March.
Dr. Tom Urbaniak says the new Liberal leader will need time to name a cabinet and prepare a throne speech.
He also predicts the opposition parties won’t back off from a non-confidence vote.
“So we’ll immediately see whether any opposition parties are open in the slightest to negotiating with a new Prime Minister, my guess is probably not,” said Urbaniak.
He adds something else to watch out for is a potential court challenge from the opposition on proroguing parliament.
Urbaniak says it happened in the U.K. in 2019, when former Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked the Queen to prorogue parliament to avoid a Brexit debate, which was then overturned by the court.
“Based on that precedent from 2019, they could say that the advice Trudeau gave to the Governor General is unconstitutional because it prevents parliament from filling its constitutional duty.”
Urbaniak says it will be interesting to see the process that the Liberal Party will put in place to choose a new leader, and if any current cabinet members will resign to focus on being a candidate.
