Thousands of lobster fishers are heading out to sea for Dumping Day.
It’s happening Tuesday in LFA 33 and 34, which covers Digby along the southern coast of Nova Scotia, all the way to Halifax County.
Yarmouth Reverend Bill Newell gave his annual ‘Blessing of the Fleet.’
“We pray that this is a successful season, as the well-being of our whole region is heavily dependent on this. We also pray for the families of our fishers, who are anxiously awaiting at home,” said Rev. Newell.
West Nova MP Chris d’Entremont says safety is key.
“Hopefully everything will go well, and everyone will stay safe, then we’ll find out tomorrow if there’s lots of lobsters. Today is an exciting day, everyone has worked so hard to prepare for the season, but ultimately we want everyone to come home,” said d’Entremont.
Combined landings last year were over $530 million.
The season was delayed by one day due to high winds.
Reports of a price in open areas last week were around $11 a pound.
