It represents 550 food banks and more than 3000 food programs in Canada.
Director of Policy and Research at Food Banks Canada Shawn Pegg delivered some startling figures, More than 860, 000 Canadians access food from a food bank in March alone. More than 300, 000 of those helped were children. That’s enough children to fill 6000 school buses.”
He says the number of people accessing food banks has increased for the third consecutive year, and it is now 28 per cent higher than it was in 2008 before the recession..
Food banks in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia led the national increase in use. The number of people accessing help in those provinces jumped 20 per cent between 2015 and 2016..
