The Town of Shelburne is requesting money from the federal government to cover the costs of the MV Farley Mowat.
The vessel has been a burden since 2014 after it was abandoned at the Shelburne Marine Terminal.
In a letter to federal minister of transport, Mayor Karen Mattatall says the vessel has cost them over $131,000.
She says the federal government has some responsibility after seizing the Farley Mowat in 2008 from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and bringing it to Canada.
“We believe that when they seized it they just let it go to become derelict like it is today.”
Mattatall says she is pleased about the recent motion brought forward by Bernadette Jordan on abandoned and derelict vessels.
However, she says the town has outstanding bills that need to be addressed.
She says it’s unlikely the town will recover any costs from the vessel’s owner.
