A Shelburne County man has been awarded a Medal of Bravery.
Leading Seaman Eric Nickerson was among four people honoured yesterday at province House.
The government calls them heroes but Nickerson says he’s not.
He says he was just doing his job last November 19.
Nickerson was stationed on the Canadian Coast Guard vessel Clarks Harbour when they responded to a distress call of a sailboat taking on water in rough seas off southwestern Nova Scotia.
Swells were over 30 feet with 60 knot winds.
The man aboard the sailboat was swept over and according to the official report, Eric Nickerson jumped into the frigid water without hesitation.
He says he’d do it again
“To me it was part of my job, I fully intend to do the best job I can do when I go to sea. The men that work out there and make their living out there deserve the best coverage they can get.”
Nickerson says those who work on the sea for a living deserve the best coverage they can get.
