The executive director of the Tri-County Women’s Centre says there is a housing crisis in the region.
A coalition of groups, including the centre, is urging people to take part in a housing survey to get a better picture of how bad the situation is.
Bernadette MacDonald says, simply put, there’s not enough affordable housing for people on low and fixed incomes.
“And there’s not enough accessible housing for people that are leaving hospital.”
She says everyday groups like the TCWC and Shyft House are trying help people like single mothers and youth who are struggling to find housing.
Denise Vacon with Public Health says by digging deeper with the survey they can get a better sense of specific needs.
She says not having a safe, healthy and affordable place to live affects people’s physical and mental health.
