The MLA for Queens-Shelburne says problems with health care delivery in Shelburne began shortly after the centralization of the the Nova Scotia Health Authority.
Kim Masland says it was difficult to hear all the stories that people shared at yesterday’s public meeting in Shelburne.
Many people said health care decisions need to return to the local level to help address ER closures at Roseway Hospital.
Masland says the Nova Scotia Health Authority board is not transparent.
“It seems like all of the issues that really started to come to the forefront since we’ve had this super boards in Halifax. A board that meets in secrecy, a board that has, i think, one member with health experience.”
Masland says the board members are trying to do the best they can but they are not connected to what is happening in rural communities.
She says one thing the province must do is change its requirements for collaborative care family physicians.
“It listed in great detail of the requirements but in the end it said ER coverage would be great but not essential. If you’re going to using the privilege of the facility then you really should be able to offer time on that ER.”
