The new ferry that will travel between Long and Brier Islands has arrived in Westport.
The vessel will be christened there on Saturday.
The ‘Margaret’s Justice’ was named after Margaret Davis, a Westport widow, who, at 63 years of age, walked from Brier Island to
Halifax to protect her property rights.
The vessel will eventually replace the ‘Joe Casey.
Graham Oakley is vice-president of new construction for A.F Theriault and Sons of Meteghan River which built the ferry.
He was aboard the ‘Margaret’s Justice’ which just finished Transport Canada inspection this morning.
“It holds 18 cars, 96 passengers. It’s going to be a replacement for the ‘Joe Casey’ eventually. We started about a year and a half ago with construction of the steel work. It’s not yet certified to carry passengers, there’s one more step. The boat is very maneuverable .”
Westport historian Alva McDormand will perform the christening.
The vessel’s name was suggested by Carter Thurber, a graduate of Islands Consolidated School in Freeport.
He will unveil the ferry’s plaque.
