The Minister of Labour and Advanced Education will not appoint a mediator at this time to try and resolve a dispute with the Nova Scotia Teachers Union.
Kelly Regan says she will continue to monitor the situation and is prepared to revisit the decision.
Under legislation, the minister may appoint a mediator when she believes it may bring about settlement of, or prevent, a dispute.
Meanwhile, the MLA for Queens-Shelburne, Sterling Belliveau, asked if the premier was willing to get back to the negotiating table with the union.
Stephen McNeil says the ball is in the union’s court.
“I’ve said that if the Teachers Union can find savings and want to bring back, we’ll be happy to share those back with the members. Otherwise, like all public servants the financial envelope is what it is.”
McNeil says school board officials, the union and province will meet Thursday to discuss working conditions.
The teachers voted in favour of strike action just over two weeks ago.
The earliest they could strike is December 3.
