The family of an Amherst woman who died after a seven hour wait in an emergency room is suing Nova Scotia Health.
Thirty-seven-year-old Allison Holthoff died at the Cumberland Regional Health Centre on New Year’s Eve.
The mother-of-three’s condition worsened as she waited to see a doctor, but by the time that happened it was too late.
A Halifax-based law firm alleges the health authority was negligent in meeting the standard of care, but those claims have not been proven in court.
A review is underway into what happened at the hospital.
MLA wants independent investigation
Cumberland North MLA Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin says she wants an external investigation into Holthoff’s death.
“It’s unfortunate that Ali’s family has to use the courts as an avenue to get answers and ensure accountability. I, and Ali’s family, feel strongly there ought to be an independent investigation into Ali’s death,” said Smith-McCrossin.
She says Nova Scotians need to have confidence in the health care system and that confidence is dwindling, particularly when it comes to accessing emergency care.
