The Member of Parliament for West Nova wants to elevate the status of Remembrance Day. Colin Fraser introduced Bill C-311 in the House of Commons last week. The private members bill is seeking to recognize Remembrance Day as a legal holiday under the federal Holidays Act. That would give the day the same legal status as Canada Day and Victoria Day. Fraser says we owe this to our veterans. “I think it’s really important to do everything we can to make sure we’re properly recognizing the significance of Remembrance Day, and that people have the opportunity to mark the solemn occasion at cenotaphs and memorial services across the country.” Fraser says this wouldn’t make Remembrance Day a national holiday, but it would give the provinces and territories the option to implement it. Further debate will take place in the House on December 2nd. A vote isn’t expected until early 2017.
This #RemembranceDay, let’s all pay tribute to those who have served and those currently serving our country. #RememberThem pic.twitter.com/qlI71KpND2
