A winning weekend to start 2023 for the league-leading Yarmouth Junior A Mariners.
They defeated Truro 5-1 Friday night, and last-place South Shore 3-1 on Saturday at Mariners Centre.
In Friday’s game, all five of their goals came on the powerplay.
Head Coach and GM Laurie Barron says their special teams have caught lightning in a bottle.
“The new unit seemed to click. It’s like a snowball, it seemed to grow, especially when things are going well. We got lots of bodies and pucks to the front of the net, and we had really quick puck movement. It looked good,” says Barron.
The Mariners now have a nine point lead on the Bearcats for first in the division, and have won six straight overall.
It was also the debut of Nathan Kelly, the team’s newest acquisition from Fredericton. He had a goal and two assists on Friday.
Barron says they are starting to bring it at the Fishtank.
“We were about a .600 team at home before break, and an .800 team on the road. It’s nice to have the road record going well, but we want to play well at home. We have the best fans in the league, and we want to play well in front of them.”
The Mariners play in Amherst on Thursday, and will face the Ramblers at home this Saturday.
