Some say they are noisy, the fumes stink and their owners are irresponsible.
Love ’em or hate ’em, motorized bicycles are likely here to stay.
There aren’t many in the town or Yarmouth, probably less than a dozen.
Even the mayor says they can be an annoyance if people don’t operate them in a prudent manner.
Mayor Pam Mood was a guest on Sunday’s Weekender program and took calls from listeners and one man called about the bicycles.
“Get these motorized bicycles off the street. I come through town many times by vehicle and somebody’s going to get hit. They’ve got no insurance, some of them don’t know the rules of the road and they go wherever they feel like. I think a by-law could be passed.”
Mayor Mood responded saying, “They do weave in an out of traffic and there’s some erratic driving out there. but that goes to the RCMP. They have to have a motor of a certain size, that type of thing. We are working on it.”
She says a by-law would be difficult to enforce.
“It’s one thing to initiate a by-law but then you have to enforce it. We have a By-law Enforcement Officer and we have the RCMP. Do you call the RCMP every time someone is on a motorized bicycle ?” Maybe a by-law could be considered.”
