A vote will be held tonight to determine the next steps on Bernadette Jordan’s motion about abandoned and derelict vessels.
Opposition MPs debated the motion earlier this week in the House of Commons.
Members of parliament are expected to have their say on the motion which calls for more education, improved ownership identification and government help to remove abandoned vessels in communities.
Jordan spoke Monday about the Port of Shelburne as an example of why this motion needs to be approved.
“They have done everything legally possible to have the Farley Mowat, an abandoned vessel, removed. But they still have it taking up one quarter of their wharf space.”
Jordan says people in coastal communities have waited long enough for action.
However, she adds the federal government can’t spend hundreds of millions of dollars to make the issue go away.
“We cannot give irresponsible vessel owners a get out of jail free card simply by making the taxpayers responsible for cleaning up someone elses mess.”
The vote is expected around 8 p.m.
