Yesterday’s budget from the provincial PC government is drawing criticism from the opposition.
Yarmouth Liberal MLA Zach Churchill is sharing his reaction.
While the focus has been on healthcare, Churchill is highlighting cuts taking place in other areas.
“They’ve decreased funding for our fishery sector as well as other natural resources sectors like forestry,” says Churchill. “As we all know, our resource based sectors are absolutely critical to rural Nova Scotia, particularly our fishery sector in Yarmouth, and to reduce funding by millions to the fishery sector is a real concern to me.”
He says funding for fisheries has decreased by over two million dollars.
Churchill says while the province is committing to moving forward with addictions centres, they aren’t moving forward with one for Yarmouth.
“So that’s of great concern to me. We know that in Yarmouth we have addictions issues, we have capacity issues at our hospital and the fact that they have not moved forward with that addictions centre in Yarmouth I think is going to exacerbate the addictions and mental health challenges that we have in our area.”
He adds that there isn’t any movement in the budget on increases to mental health care.
Churchill recently launched his campaign for leader of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party.
