The Town of Yarmouth is on its way to becoming more accessible.
At last week’s special council meeting the Accessibility Action Plan was approved.
The plan is in response to Nova Scotia’s Accessibility Act, requiring public sector bodies to develop accessibility action plans by spring of this year.
Mayor Pam Mood discussed what the plan means to the town.
“For the Town of Yarmouth it’s a great step forward towards being a barrier free town for citizens and visitors alike so we’re really excited about the plan.”
The Town’s Accessibility Advisory Committee spent a year working on the plan.
It focuses on barriers the public faces in five key areas: using municipal buildings or public spaces, accessing goods and services, communication and information, using public transportation and applying for employment.
Mood discusses the work that went into the plan.
“They did a complete scan of all the town prosperities, everything that’s usable within the town, where do we need to make changes, where are we okay and what are those steps.”
She says the plan will now be sent to the provincial government.
