A group of high school students from Yarmouth are learned a lesson about land conservation.
The 20 students cleaned up along 300 metres of shoreline on Robert’s Island in Yarmouth County on Monday.
The students were participating in the 02 program (Options and Opportunities), at Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School,
They helped Nolan d’Eon, the owner of Eel Lake Oyster Farm who reused some of the pots.
400 oyster pots were removed.
The land, 20 hectares, was acquired by the Nature Conservancy of Canada in April.
Doug Van Hemesseny, the stewardship co-ordinator with the Conservancy says the 20 students were hard at it.
“NCC staff removed about 400 traps earlier. The students worked hard and were a tremendous help.”
“It shows environmental responsibility in terms of us being land owners wanting to ensure the land is in good shape. The other lesson is that some of these oyster cages are going to be reused or recycled and that’s a very good lesson.”
