A sports doctor, originally from Shelburne County, was part of the Team Canada National Women’s Hockey team staff at the Olympics.
Dr. Tina Atkinson was the Team Physician for the gold medal winning squad in Beijing last month.
She says her family members in the Shelburne area have been extremely supportive.
“Someone sent me a picture, where the Town of Shelburne had congratulated me on Facebook for going to the Olympics. It’s always nice to get that kind of support, so I really appreciated it,” says Atkinson.
She says it was amazing to have a front row seat near the bench for the historic win.
Atkinson says she finally accomplished her dream after 25 years of practicing medicine.
“I remember in Grade 11 writing a paper on being a sports medicine physician. I’ve been practicing for a long-time, and I finally made it to the Olympics. I’m so proud to represent Shelburne.”
Atkinson is also the team physician for the Halifax Mooseheads, and the Chief Medical Officer for Hockey Nova Scotia.
She says she’s proud of the team, especially Blayre Turnbull of Stellarton and Jill Saulnier of Halifax, who became the first Nova Scotian women to win Olympic hockey gold.
Our golden girls.
