The number of visitors to the town of Shelburne is down this year. This, even though provincial tourism numbers are up. Shelburne is an historic seaport and a centre of Black Loyalist history. Mayor Karen Harris-Mattatall says she doesn’t know why the number of tourists is below expectations. She says they didn’t arrive via the Cat ferry in the numbers that they did in other communities. “The feeling here is that it’s just the timing of the ferry landing in Yarmouth. It lands there in the evening, so if they stay all night, in the morning they would probably have their plans already made and if it didn’t include Shelburne then they would probably bypass us.” The mayor says the town needs to work harder to encourage those who may be getting on the ferry to make Shelburne one of their destination points. That she says is a major marketing issue.
