Less than 100 years ago the 20 women or so who were elected this weekend wouldn’t even have been able to run.
That’s because women weren’t legally considered people until October 18, 1929.
Tomorrow is Person’s day, which recognizes those who fought for women to be added to the Person’s act.
Dianne Crowell from Second Story women’s Centre says it’s important we don’t take their efforts for granted.
“It is interesting to note that there are women in Lunenburg County and Queens County that, when they were born, for the first moments of their life, were not persons.”
Crowell reminds people that even after women were considered ‘people’ it was still several more years before they could vote in many places.
She says despite the advances since then, there’s still a long way to go before true equality is reached.
