The Municipality of Shelburne is on track to build a new administration building.
At a special meeting earlier this week, council awarded a tender to Rikjak Construction to build a new municipal services building at a property across from Shelburne High School.
It’s been a priority for council since 2016, as the existing building on Hammond Street is a century old, and does not meet National Building Code requirements or accessibility standards.
Warden Penny Smith says she was surprised to see three competitive bids within budget, especially in these times.
“Previous councils have been talking about the need for a new administration building for approximately 30 years. I’m really pleased that we are finally moving ahead with this project, with a projected move-in date of November, 2022,” says Smith.
The total budgeted cost of the build is $7.3 million.
Smith says a public information session will be held at the high school on September 27th at 6:30 p.m. to review the design, timelines and costs of the building.
“The building will meet Rick Hansen accessibility standards. It will be barrier free, with an inclusive design. More energy efficient, and it will be equipped with audio and visual equipment that will improve citizen engagement.”
Meanwhile, provincial services will not move from the current building.
Smith says the municipality are in negotiations to secure a lease with the Department of Justice and Registry of Motor Vehicles to have them remain in the building and ensure those services stay in the community.
