The Purple Ribbon campaign begins on Sunday.
It falls on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The campaign commemorates the killing of 14 women on December 6, 1989 at Ecole Polytechniqe in Montreal.
Lisa Newell-Bain, the executive director of Juniper House in Yarmouth tells us they work with women everyday who have experienced violence and abuse.
“We provide shelter, of course, as well as the 24-hour crisis line. We also have our outreach services, which we offer in Yarmouth, Shelburne, and Digby counties.”
Newell-Bain says it’s a time for the community to come together.
“Just remember the effects that violence against women has in our community and acknowledge that it is still an ongoing concern. Tragedies occur weekly in our country.”
Thursday, December 6th is National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women.
There are two vigils, one at NSCC Burridge at 11 a.m., hosted by the Social Services Year 2 class.
The South West Labour group hosts the other at Frost Park at 5 p.m.
